Innovating for a Sustainable Future

G.I.R.D Innovation Research and Development Division

Who We Are

With over 40 years of leadership in Construction Management, General Contracting, and Concrete Restoration, our evolution now includes a dedicated focus on the research and advancement of additive construction technologies across the Canadian Prairies.

Our Vision

To become a national and international leader in the study and implementation of additive construction infrastructure. We aim to foster collaboration, educate industry professionals, and support public and private sector readiness for deploying large-scale 3D printing technologies in construction.

Our Purpose

To serve as a hub for research excellence, driving knowledge around the infrastructure, technology, design principles, and best practices required for additive construction adoption, especially in harsh and remote environments.

Research & Development Focus

Operating from our Research, Development, and Training Facility at CentrePort Canada-the largest trimodal port in North America-our work focuses on:

  • Field studies on additive construction infrastructure performance
  • Development of construction protocols for extreme climates
  • Design and structural analysis of 3D printed components
  • Robotics integration and construction automation
  • Testing frameworks for municipal and federal code compliance
  • Data gathering on environmental impact and lifecycle performance

Our Collaborations

We actively partner with academic institutions, engineering faculties, government bodies, and industry leaders to contribute to the knowledge base needed for policy, planning, and practical deployment of additive construction.

Commitment to Learning & Impact

Through open research, workshops, white papers, and strategic collaborations, G.I.R.D. seeks to democratize access to additive construction knowledge and support the built environment's shift toward resilient, sustainable, and scalable solutions.

Why It Matters

The Canadian Prairies endure some of the most extreme and unpredictable climate conditions on the planet, with temperatures ranging from -40°C to +40°C. In addition to the traditional four seasons, the region now faces increasing threats from droughts, floods, extreme winds, and wildfires. Advancing resilient construction methods is no longer optional-it is essential. The ability to build safer, faster, and more sustainably in these conditions is not just innovative-it's life-changing and, in many cases, lifesaving.
